Mediterranean Sea

Mediterranean Sea
World's largest inland sea, around which the Roman Empire was constructed. Byzantium (q.v.) inherited this geographical focus, maintaining it until the naval expansion of the Vandals and Arabs (qq.v.). During the period of the Crusades (q.v.), Byzantine economic control over the eastern Mediterranean was challenged by the Italian maritime states, especially by rivals Genoa and Venice (qq.v.). Venetian spoils resulting from the Fourth Crusade's conquest of Constantinople (qq.v.) in 1204 consisted largely of islands and ports that gave Venice commercial hegemony in the eastern Mediterranean until the Treaty of Nymphaion (q.v.).
